Gu Worms

Cultivation mechanic in Reverend Insanity

Mechanic Gu

Gu are living creatures that a cultivator feeds, refines, and manipulates.

What a Gu is

Gu are the essence of heaven and earth, and a Gu Master is someone who has opened an aperture and uses primeval essence to feed, refine, and manipulate them. ch. 7 All Gu worms have only one ability. ch. 105

Without food, Gu worms die of hunger. ch. 63 ch. 91 Rare Gu that appear on the market are snatched at once. ch. 50 A Gu Master too weak to hold one can have it taken by force. ch. 43

Gu can be found in the wild, not only through academy pick or trade. When a thunder crown wolf dies, wild Gu abandon its body, and Gu Masters scramble to catch them. ch. 167

Gu are also traded for primeval stones. A visiting caravan runs bidding for rare worms such as Liquor worm. ch. 110 ch. 111 Fang Yuan sells rank one healing grass Gu through a shopkeeper so clansmen can buy them. Ill-intent customers are sent to wreck Fang Yuan’s wine tavern as personal harassment from a family grudge, not as ordinary business rivalry. ch. 107 For Fang Yuan, money and fortune are just material goods; only cultivation is the root. ch. 112

Gu can be taken. Fang Yuan already owns a Liquor worm when he feeds it monkey wine in a wine shop to display what he holds. ch. 44 He later tracks another Liquor worm opportunity to a treehouse. ch. 109 He enters the bidding for that second worm. ch. 110 He wins, so the second Liquor worm is already in his possession. ch. 111 He fuses the two Liquor worms into a Four Flavours Liquor worm. ch. 121

Moonlight Gu as an early case

The Gu Yue academy sends newly awakened youths to pick a vital Gu from the academy’s Gu room. ch. 7 Moonlight Gu is the clan’s local specialty: a rank one breed cultivated by secret method, light as paper and small enough to sit in a palm. Fang Yuan chooses one when he still has no lead on a Liquor worm. ch. 8

Feeding

A Gu must be fed, and what it eats is specific to the Gu. This is the recurring cost of cultivation and the reason a Gu Master’s finances matter as much as their strength. Normally speaking, the higher the rank, the longer the interval between meals: a rank two Gu usually feeds every half a month, and a rank three every month or longer, while higher rank still costs more food on average. ch. 100

Owning a Gu and being able to keep it alive are different things. Early on, Fang Yuan declines to take a dead clansman’s Gu: clan rules treat those worms as inheritance, taking them risks exposure, and he also passes up Gu he cannot afford to feed. ch. 96

Ranks of Gu

Gu are ranked on the same nine-level scale as Gu Masters. Gu Masters at rank one normally use rank one Gu, because higher rank Gu cost more to feed and to activate. ch. 8 The full ladder as a system statement is covered on ranks and realms.

Getting a first Gu

The Gu Yue clan holds an Awakening Ceremony for its fifteen-year-old youths. ch. 4 The ceremony grades talent and, when it succeeds, forms an aperture in the child’s body. ch. 5 After the aperture opens and the primeval sea coagulates, those youths are rank one Gu Masters. The academy then sends them to the academy Gu room to pick a Gu worm to refine as their vital Gu. ch. 7 Everything after that is acquisition, whether by purchase, by hunting, or by taking.

Immortal Gu

When Fang Yuan moves to refine Second Aperture Gu, rank five is mortal, rank six is immortal, and refining an Immortal Gu requires immortal essence as a basic condition. ch. 377 Immortal Gu continue above that divide, including rank nine Immortal Gu. ch. 657 How refinement works is covered on refinement.

Immortal Gu are rare enough that recognising an unknown one is its own difficulty. One identification method is to consume immortal essence to activate the Immortal Gu and watch the effect, but immortal essence is precious, a wrong activation can harm the user, and some Immortal Gu show nothing unless the target or environment fits. ch. 663 Activation cost is not the same for every Immortal Gu: attitude Gu can be activated with mental energy and used by rank six Gu Immortals even though it is rank eight. ch. 1083 Primeval and immortal essence are covered on aperture and primeval essence.

See Spring Autumn Cicada.

Carriers of the Great Dao

Gu are also the essence of the world and carriers of the Great Dao, and a Gu worm has one ability. A killer move is an assembly of different Gu stacking those single abilities. ch. 573

Immortal Gu feeding

Immortal Gu left underfed are extremely hungry, and feeding them is a difficult problem in its own right. ch. 672 Fang Yuan still faces feeding pressure when an Immortal Gu of his is hungry. ch. 679 Feeding Immortal Gu remains a live problem at later ranks. ch. 1083

Wild Immortal Gu

Wild Immortal Gu also exist. One emerges among the Gu living in an ancient yaksha octopus king after enough time has passed. ch. 933 The scramble for wild Gu on a dying beast is the same pattern at mortal scale. ch. 167

Treasure Yellow Heaven

Gu worms are shipped and sold through treasure yellow heaven, an open market Gu Immortals use to move batches of Gu, including Immortal Gu transfers that draw public attention. ch. 1032

Rank titles outside the usual scale

One chapter is titled for a rank ten Immortal Gu. ch. 1234 That title sits outside the one-to-nine scale used elsewhere and is not proof of a standing tenth rank.
