Strength Path

Cultivation path in Reverend Insanity

Strength path

The strength path is the Gu path concerned with bodily power. It is the plainest discipline in the novel and one of the first the text names as a path with a cultivation problem of its own.

English uses the same word for a cultivation path and for how dangerous a fighter is. The novel keeps those two uses apart, and the path has a named cultivation problem rather than a single rising number.

Strength path is not battle strength

Battle strength is a general measure of how dangerous a cultivator is, regardless of path. The chapter index is full of it. Chapter 80 is titled for a surge in battle strength during the Qing Mao Mountain arcs, ch. 80 chapter 493 repeats almost the same title hundreds of chapters later, ch. 493 and chapter 1118 is titled for a future rank eight battle strength. ch. 1118 None of those three chapters is about the strength path.

The strength path is a named cultivation path. Chapter 275 is titled “Strength Path and Ice Path”, ch. 275 which puts it in a list with another path and settles that the term is a path name rather than a description.

When a sentence in a fan summary says a character has great strength, it is almost always talking about battle strength. This page uses the phrase strength path only where the novel is talking about the path.

What the path governs

Wei Yang states the greatest weakness of the strength path: punches and kicks only unleash a portion of the strength stored in a Gu Master’s body. Permanent strength Gu are expensive, yet ordinary attacks often draw only a fraction of that stored power, sometimes not even ten percent. He compares the body to a vat of water where battle uses only some of what fills it. ch. 280

Strength path Gu Masters who bring out a beast phantom can display the Gu worm’s full power. Wei Yang says that still happens rarely, and only with a rigid attack style that is easy to evade. ch. 280

Chapter 288 is titled “The Crux of Strength Path Cultivation”. In that chapter Fang Yuan finds it difficult to bring out a beast strength phantom with ordinary attacks, then uses all-out effort Gu to summon the phantom and land a decisive blow. He also hits the limit of what his body can bear from stacked beast strengths and turns to steel tendon Gu to reinforce his tendons. ch. 288

Beast phantoms are the Dao mark of physical strength, a trace of Great Dao that strength Gu leave lurking in the body until their true power is unleashed. ch. 292

The subject matter itself is visible in the Gu names. A Carapace Gu is paired with a Crocodile Strength Gu, ch. 204 a Bitter Strength Gu is named, ch. 304 and a Jun Strength Gu is named. ch. 442 The pattern across those three is that strength Gu are named for the creature or the quality the strength is borrowed from, which fits the account of Gu as living tools on the Gu worms page.

The novel also gives the path a place in its argument about what matters. Chapter 252 is titled “The only thing that matters is strength”. ch. 252 In that chapter Chen Shuang Jin tells Chen Xin that in this cold world, the only thing that matters is strength. Chapter 449 is titled “Strength is the most important”. ch. 449 Those titles are not claims about the cultivation path.

Fang Yuan and the strength path

In the Shang clan city stretch, Fang Yuan chooses the strength path on purpose. After Wei Yang advises against it as a cheap, ordinary route, Fang Yuan still states that he wants to walk the strength path, buys a brown bear innate strength Gu, and the narration notes that choosing strength path was part of his plans involving the three kings inheritance. ch. 275 That is a second-life cultivation choice, not a fan summary of the first life.

Chapter 71 is titled for keeping a low profile even when one’s strength can carry a boar, ch. 71 which sits earlier inside the Qing Mao Mountain arc and is about concealment rather than path allegiance.

Extreme physique and Immortal Gu

The ten extreme physique Great Strength True Martial is named in the Imperial Court stretch for Hei Lou Lan, including the need for a strength path Immortal Gu to advance to Gu Immortal. ch. 528 Chapter 618 is titled “Great Strength True Martial Physique”, ch. 618 which continues that body-level strength thread. Chapter 682 is titled for refining a Group Strength Gu, ch. 682 which is the refinement process applied to this path specifically.

Chapter 758 is titled “Eat Strength”. ch. 758 The eat strength Immortal Gu is both strength path and food path: by consuming beast meat or vegetation related to strength path, strength path dao marks grow naturally on the Gu Immortal’s body and fit that body. That is the novel’s account of what “eat strength” does, not a vague transfer of battle strength from one holder to another.

Notable practitioners

Fang Yuan chooses the strength path in the Shang clan city stretch, per the section above. ch. 275

Path founder

Fairy Li Shan states that Reckless Savage Demon Venerable was a strength path Immortal Venerable, founder of the strength path and also of transformation path. ch. 686 A later chapter repeats the same founding claim: Reckless Savage was the founder of strength path and had also cultivated transformation path. ch. 1041
