Wood Charm Gu is a rank three Gu that lets a Gu Master battle as a tree spirit and absorb natural essence from the air. Long use woodenizes the body and can leave a wooden corpse.

The name first appears when Fang Yuan watches Gu Yue Qing Shu spar Xiong Li on Alliance slope and spots two emerald-green leaves in Qing Shu’s hair. Fang Yuan names that sign as Wood Charm Gu. ch. 126

Form and rank

It is a rank three Gu, and the fusion line also starts from rank three. ch. 126

No cited chapter describes the Gu worm’s resting look in the aperture. The early use mark on the Gu Master is those two emerald-green leaves in the hair. ch. 126

Effect

The text calls Wood Charm a tree spirit. Using the Gu lets the Gu Master battle as a tree spirit embodiment: absorb natural essence from the air to replenish primeval essence, the same way primeval stones feed essence, but as an instinct that does not split focus in a fight. Users are experts in attrition and can fight about three times longer from that replenishment, though the text denies endless use. ch. 126

As a tree spirit embodiment, Gu worms such as Green Vine Gu and Pine Needle Gu also have their strength amplified. ch. 126

Powerful use has a cost. That rank four Gu fused with a thousand-years Lifespan Gu becomes rank five thousand-years Wood Charm Gu. ch. 126

Gu Yue Qing Shu’s use

Qing Shu is the number one rank two Gu Master of Gu Yue clan when Fang Yuan first sees the Gu in the Alliance slope contest. With Wood Charm in play, his green vines darken, thicken, sprout leaves, regrow broken lengths, and raise coiling strength enough to hold a foe with the strength of two bears. ch. 126

Before facing Bai Ning Bing, Qing Shu trusts the Gu to let him fight a rank three opponent. Fang Yuan privately judges that reckless use would make Qing Shu much stronger than an average rank three Gu Master and able to fight above his level, though Northern Dark Ice Soul still makes the match deadly. ch. 139

Fight against Bai Ning Bing

Qing Shu activates Wood Charm Gu when Bai Ning Bing demands Fang Yuan’s location and Qing Shu refuses to betray his clansman. ch. 140 It is the first time he uses the Gu without considering the consequences. His body turns toward tree spirit form: tree-ring flesh, bark skin, lengthening ears, jade-green leaf hair, then a full three-meter tree spirit shape after Blue Bird Ice Coffin freezes him. ch. 141

In that form he feels rich natural essence in the air as an almost infinite primeval essence source. Green Vine Gu, Pin Needle Gu, and vitality grass show growth and gain power as wood attribute Gu, while Moonwhirl Gu does not change that way. ch. 141 At rank three, Northern Dark Ice Soul recovery is still slightly inferior to the tree spirit’s natural essence extraction; rank four recovery would greatly surpass Wood Charm Gu. ch. 142

He knows unrestrained use ends as a dead treeman, and Bai Ning Bing asks the same question mid-fight. Bai Ning Bing also names the look as Wood Charm Gu refined, and says that Gu is harder to refine than Frost Demon Gu. ch. 141 The Gu’s strength then corrodes his whole body, takes over eyes and hearing, and begins to take over his consciousness, bringing him to the brink of death while he still nearly strangles Bai Ning Bing. ch. 142

Frost Demon Gu is on par with Wood Charm Gu in value; it transforms the user into a frost demon and, with extended use, dwindles the life force into an ice statue. ch. 143 Qing Shu could surpass levels because he had Wood Charm Gu, a powerful and special rank three Gu worm. ch. 145

The Qing Mao chapters describe rank, tree spirit effect, amplification of wood attribute Gu, and backlash without naming a cultivation path for this Gu. No cited chapter assigns Wood Charm Gu to a named path that this wiki has a page for.

Qing Shu potential

After Qing Mao Mountain’s power struggle, Fang Yuan notes that if clan errands had not eaten Qing Shu’s time, Qing Shu might have broken through rank two peak stage to rank three, then used Wood Charm Gu and perhaps killed Bai Ning Bing. ch. 161
