A battle formation is a coordinated fighting arrangement of Gu Masters or Gu Immortals. At immortal height it is a formation-path method that can fuse several fighters into one body, with stricter path and practice demands than an Immortal Gu House.
In mortal combat, outsider interference can throw a group’s battle formation into chaos and break cooperation. ch. 136 A standard battle formation can keep order across changing terrain and answer threats at first sight. ch. 359 Named mortal examples include Zheng tribe’s lightning spear battle formation, treated as a tribal trump card in northern plains warfare. ch. 478 Lang Ya land spirit assembles Heavenly Giant Solor as a battle formation that covers Gu Immortals and the land spirit in Gu worms and combines their strength. ch. 883
Path and practice demands
Immortal Gu Houses have no requirements toward the Gu Immortals’ paths and cultivation levels. A battle formation does. Heavenly Giant Solor works best when the Gu Immortals inside share one path; mixed paths weaken the giant. Many historical battle formations had still stricter or stranger conditions, which helped them vanish over history while Immortal Gu Houses proved more convenient. ch. 884
Flexibility versus Gu Houses
Ancient battle formations are still Gu formations, but their core is the Gu Immortals inside, who can use personal immortal killer moves and have those moves amplified. Immortal Gu Houses fix offense, defense, movement, healing, and investigation by their Immortal Gu and mainly scale with immortal essence spent. ch. 905
