Southern Border

Mountain clans and forests fill the Southern Border.

Fang Yuan begins here. The Southern Border alone is larger than seven to eight times Earth’s surface, and under that hostile land humans often build mountain villages as clans and hold together.^{ch. 29}

Mountains and clans

The region has a hundred thousand mountains, and Qing Mao Mountain is only one of them. On every mountain sit villages after villages, held through blood relationships and kinships. Between the mountains the forests are deep and ominous, cliffs are steep, and ferocious beasts and Gu worms fill the routes, so mortals cannot pass and a traveler needs at least rank three to force the way alone.^{ch. 39} Wild beasts for blood are common across those forested and mountainous areas.^{ch. 157}

Trade between peaks runs through large merchant caravans that gather Gu Masters to conquer the travel routes.^{ch. 39}

Among the five regions, the south is mountainous terrain called the Southern Border.^{ch. 334}

Gu Yue Awakening Ceremony

At Gu Yue Village on Qing Mao Mountain, over a hundred fifteen-year-old youths gather for the Awakening Ceremony. The rite sends each named youth across an underground river into a flower sea. How far they walk measures talent from none through D to A grade, and the academy elder records step counts as that measure.^{ch. 4}

Barriers between regions

Barriers act like a heavenly chasm between Southern Border, Northern Plains, Eastern Seas, Western Desert, and Central Continent, blocking communication and news.^{ch. 353}

Three great rivers

Southern Border has three great rivers: red dragon river, whose water is red as blood, jade dragon river, which carries green waves, and yellow dragon river, yellow in color and the most heavily silted of the three.^{ch. 680} The three run through the whole region.^{ch. 1326}

Regional walls

Each of the five regions is covered with a membrane that forms the boundaries of heaven and earth and isolates the regions from each other.^{ch. 710} Southern Border’s membrane is later named the miasma regional wall, seen as a purple-black miasma wall.^{ch. 1044}
