Second Aperture Gu

Second Aperture Gu is a rank six Immortal Gu that lets a Gu Master gain a second aperture. Completing its refinement is the dying wish tied to San Cha Mountain's blessed land.

Land spirit Ba Gui is stunned that Fang Yuan already knows the target Gu when they speak inside the San Cha Mountain blessed land hall.^{ch. 377}

Appearance

The finished Gu looks like a beetle with two sharp ends and a fat middle, about the size of a young man’s fist. It is like blue jade, soft and cool to the touch, with a golden eye on its plump back that flashes with lightning. Fang Yuan’s semi-finished copy has a vague pottery look with no hint of life: grey stone carved into a beetle shape with a big belly, sharp head and tail, and no antennas or legs.^{ch. 487}

Form and rank

Second Aperture Gu is not a mortal Gu but a rank six Immortal Gu.^{ch. 377} The San Cha revelation chapters do not describe a finished Gu worm body.

To refine it at San Cha Mountain, apertures are the main ingredient. Fang Yuan uses beast strength placenta Gu to devour Gu Master apertures and raise the future Second Aperture Gu’s aptitude; after Tie Mu Bai’s rank five peak stage aperture is absorbed, that aptitude reaches forty percent.^{ch. 379}

Effect

Fang Yuan’s own accounting at first revelation is that with A grade ninety percent aptitude, a second aperture would mean a hundred and eighty percent primeval essence, double primeval essence recovery speed, and a second set of Gu worms, sharply raising battle strength among the same rank.^{ch. 377}

Recipe at San Cha Mountain

The blessed land’s original master was a strength path Gu Immortal who created the recipe and died in a tribulation before the crucial step. That final obsession became land spirit Ba Gui, and the dying wish that tests a new owner is to refine Second Aperture Gu.^{ch. 377}

In Fang Yuan’s previous-life knowledge the legendary Gu became extinct before the first one was created. The first prior attempt fails when the chosen strength path Gu Master is poor at refining and dies after starting the process. Later attempts come too late: immortal essence is severely lacking, the land spirit is weakened, Gu Masters kill the refining strength path Gu Master and then the land spirit, and with immortal essence expended the refinement ends in utter failure.^{ch. 377}

Refining it consumes large immortal essence, the recipe has up to a thousand steps, and the final stage needs another rank six Immortal Gu. Fang Yuan treats the finished Gu as his greatest reward for the trip even if the blessed land itself cannot be saved afterward.^{ch. 378}

Path

The cited San Cha chapters tie the recipe to a strength path Gu Immortal creator without assigning Second Aperture Gu itself to a named cultivation path.^{ch. 377} Cited chapters never give a Chinese-character name beyond the English form used in translation.

Acquiring and activating a copy

Lang Ya land spirit hands Fang Yuan a finished Second Aperture Gu after a refinement Fang Yuan forced through an old agreement. That copy looks like a beetle with two sharp ends and a fat middle, about the size of a young man’s fist, blue jade to the touch, with a golden eye on its back. The Gu is already Fang Yuan’s object, but as a mortal without green grape immortal essence he cannot activate it alone. Second Aperture Gu is also an expendable Gu that disappears after use, and it cannot create a third aperture.^{ch. 487}

Fang Yuan also shows Lang Ya land spirit the semi-finished Second Aperture Gu he had refined himself. That product has a vague look like unfinished pottery, with no hint of life: grey stone carved into a beetle shape, big belly, sharp head and tail, and no antennas or legs. Its outline resembles the real Gu, but the quality is not comparable.^{ch. 487}

Later, Lang Ya land spirit pours immortal essence into the Gu and throws it into Fang Yuan. It becomes a bean-sized green light, is rejected by his first aperture at the navel, hops to his chest, and explodes into a new aperture that looks both real and virtual.^{ch. 490}

Mortal rank one variant

Ba Shi Ba holds a rank one mortal Second Aperture Gu that matches the earlier beetle form: two sharp ends, fat midsection, young-man’s-fist size, blue jade feel, golden eye on the back. Fang Yuan tells Xia Cha he modified the original Immortal Gu into a series from rank one to six, and that he is only selling rank one copies.^{ch. 1852}

That mortal Gu needs neither primeval essence nor immortal essence to activate. The user drips blood onto it and feeds it until it is full; it then self-detonates and takes effect, creating a tiny rank one aperture.^{ch. 1852}
