Refinement failure is when Gu refinement does not succeed. It spends materials, strikes the refiner with backlash, and at immortal height can also destroy aids such as success dao marks.
Failure to refine a Gu can inflict backlash on the Gu Master’s body and soul. Body injuries are easier to resolve; soul damage from multitasking is troublesome. The higher the rank and the rarer the Gu, the more severe the consequences. Refinement Gu Masters are often seriously injured or bedridden from Gu refinement failures, and sometimes the backlash leads to deaths. ch. 304 Fang Yuan later restates the same rule during second aperture Gu work: failure in Gu refinement causes a backlash, even when the steps are done perfectly and luck still decides the outcome. ch. 389

Success dao marks
Once Immortal Gu refinement fails, immortal materials are lost. Injuries are a smaller matter beside the destruction of a success dao mark that had been helping dao marks of the materials fuse to the refinement standard. ch. 971
Partial recovery
Blood asset Immortal Gu can protect a portion of immortal materials or Gu worms during refinement so that, if the refinement fails, some of them can be restored afterward. ch. 1058
