Signal Gu

The name is first given when an investigative Gu Master on Qing Mao Mountain shoots one out during a wolf fight as a distress call for clan reinforcements. ^{ch. 133}

Appearance

This Gu worm is like a golden round ball with a pair of colourful feathered wings. ^{ch. 133}

Form and rank

After launch it flies into midair and explodes into a rainbow flame. It is a rank one expendable Gu worm, often used to send signals. ^{ch. 133}

Later activations are also told as bright fireworks bursting in the sky. ^{ch. 135} On Ge tribe ground, an old Gu Master pulls a Signal Gu from his aperture before he can use it, which places the worm in aperture storage in that scene. ^{ch. 455}

Cited chapters never state what Signal Gu eats, never assign it a cultivation path, never give a Chinese-character name, and never state a market price in primeval stones.

Effect

It is used to send a visible signal so nearby Gu Masters can notice and come as reinforcements. ^{ch. 133 ch. 138} The rainbow flame is observable from a 50km range. ^{ch. 133}

On Qing Mao Mountain, Gu Yue Qing Shu teaches that against a frenzy lightning wolf pack the first move is to retreat, use the Signal Gu, and wait for surrounding Gu Masters to regroup, with at least three groups needed for a good chance. ^{ch. 138} Gu Yue Fang Zheng later proposes the same call for clan reinforcements after Bai Ning Bing seals himself in ice. ^{ch. 139}

Wolf tide use

Xiong Lin raises a Signal Gu when confronting Bai Ning Bing over Plunder Gu, and bright fireworks burst overhead. ^{ch. 135}

When Xiong Jiao Man’s group is pressed by four bold lightning wolf packs, she judges that retreat into a valley and use of the Signal Gu is the wisest choice. ^{ch. 146} That Signal Gu draws surrounding Gu Master groups to help, including Chi Shan’s group, which forces Fang Yuan to play reinforcement once instead of waiting for the wolves to finish them. ^{ch. 147}

Early chapters describe the signalling use without naming a cultivation path for this Gu.
