Blood Moon Gu

Fang Yuan finds the Blood Moon Gu recipe in the Gu Yue clan secret room while choosing a rank three attack Gu after he already holds Thunderwings Gu and Sky Canopy Gu. ^{ch. 157} He fails the refinement once and succeeds on the second try, using materials taken from Gu Yue Chi Lian. ^{ch. 159}

Recipe

The recipe combines rank two Moonglow Gu and Blood Essence Gu into the rank three Gu. Fang Yuan already has Moonglow Gu when he memorizes the recipe; Blood Essence Gu is the harder material to obtain. Compared with Golden Moon, Frost Moon, and Illusionary Moon Gu, the three classics of that moonline, Blood Moon Gu is unorthodox: its refinement record is only a few thousand words, and Gu Masters who chose it have been rare. ^{ch. 157} Blood Moon Gu originated from Moonlight Gu, which is why Bai Ning Bing can use it after only a few tries. ^{ch. 203}

Effect

When activated, it throws a blood-red moonblade about the size of a face. Injuries from that blade keep bleeding. ^{ch. 157 ch. 159} Attack range is about ten meters. Overall attacking power is average, and the bleeding effect itself is not optimal in a short fight, especially against someone with healing Gu. ^{ch. 157}

Fang Yuan’s later judgment is that it specializes in prolonged battles: injuries stack and grow worse over time when the enemy has no healing Gu to answer them. On the wolf tide battlefield, clan elders credit his Blood Moon Gu with accumulating injuries on a frenzy lightning wolf until the kill becomes feasible. ^{ch. 160} Among rank three Gu, he rates its attack as not the highest, but still far above Moonglow Gu. ^{ch. 162} He slots it as his attack Gu in the six-role kit of attack, defense, healing, storage, recon, and movement. ^{ch. 161}

Its greatest drawback is a monthly weak stretch: every few days of the month it oozes fresh blood, and during that period its attack power falls to about one third. ^{ch. 157 ch. 160}

Feeding

Its food is fresh blood. The blood need not come from one fixed species, so in the Southern Border wild beasts make feeding easy. That ease is the advantage Fang Yuan likes most when he picks the recipe over Golden Moon, Frost Moon, and Illusionary Moon, which still want moon orchid petals. ^{ch. 157} After the Grand Crocodile fight he stores fresh crocodile blood in the tusita flower specifically to feed Blood Moon Gu and Blood Skull Gu. ^{ch. 205}

Fang Yuan’s early use

He memorizes the recipe on Qing Mao Mountain, ^{ch. 157} then refines it during the wolf tide and uses blood-red moonblades in the frenzy lightning wolf fight. ^{ch. 159 ch. 160} He later holds it charged in the left palm without firing while facing Bai Ning Bing, ^{ch. 167} and in that same fight also lands blood moonblades against her. ^{ch. 190} With the Chainsaw Golden Centipede he spends hours cutting a thick rock wall and, ^{ch. 188} later, tries both tools against the ice that traps him when First gen Gu Yue rises. ^{ch. 196} On Bai Gu mountain he also uses the palm crescent as a slow red-light cut rather than a thrown moonblade, circling a grass skirt monkey’s skull until the bone opens. ^{ch. 212}

In the caravan stretch he fights Ou Yang Gong with Sky Canopy Gu, a spiral bone spear, Blood Moon Gu, and Jumping Grass Gu together. ^{ch. 251} On the Shang clan battle stage several bleeding wounds force Tang Xiong to surrender once Tang Xiong’s healing Gu cannot keep up. ^{ch. 281} In Shang clan city he also judges that Blood Moon Gu is easy to raise but does not have enough attack and cannot form a set with his other Gu. ^{ch. 273}
