Each moonblade costs about 10% of Fang Yuan’s light red rank two primeval essence. At rank two initial stage that means four moonblades from a full sea of that strength; ^{ch. 114} middle stage doubles the count to eight, and upper stage doubles again to sixteen. ^{ch. 122}

When Fang Yuan browses clan rank three recipes, he notes that his own line began by fusing Moonlight Gu with Little Light Gu into Moonglow Gu, and that only a few further recipes on that base were worth using: Golden Moon, Frost Moon, and Illusory Moon Gu. ^{ch. 156} He instead chooses Blood Moon Gu, formed from rank two Moonglow Gu and Blood Essence Gu. That product keeps a face-sized moonblade, turns it blood red, adds a bleeding effect, and switches its food from moon orchid petals to fresh blood.
