Gu worm in Reverend Insanity

Courage Gu is a Ren Zu legend Gu that helps a living person face the road of death into the Door of Life and Death. It shines to drive off suffering Gu, and early text calls it a good companion of Hope Gu.

Wisdom Gu tells Ren Zu how to enter the Door of Life and Death after Verdant Great Sun dies. A living person must enter from the road of death, and must own Courage Gu so as not to fear the torture of suffering on that path. ch. 410

Companion of Hope Gu

Ren Zu finds Courage Gu after he finds Faith Gu. The text states that Courage Gu and Hope Gu are good companions, that Ren Zu already has Hope Gu and therefore sees Courage Gu occasionally, and that he has a decent relationship with it. ch. 410

Effect on the road of death

With Courage Gu’s help Ren Zu reaches the Door of Life and Death and enters the road of death. That road is pure darkness, and many suffering Gu swarm him like yellow fireflies. Courage Gu shines brightly and chases the suffering Gu away. The narration adds that courage is needed to face death. ch. 410

On the later path of life, suffering Gu grow more numerous. Courage Gu warns that there are too many of them, that life has endless suffering, and that Ren Zu must reach Dang Hun Mountain and break gutstones, because courage alone is not enough and he also needs guts. ch. 411

A later legend beat repeats that one must have Courage Gu and Faith Gu to enter the Door of Life and Death, and that those Gu are already with Ren Zu when Desolate Ancient Moon wants to follow. ch. 435 Another stretch has Northern Dark Ice Soul unable to enter because Courage Gu is already with Ren Zu. ch. 722

Form in the legend

Cited chapters never give a cultivation rank or a full body description. What they show is motion and light: Courage Gu flies to and from Ren Zu, shines brightly against suffering Gu, and later lands in his heart. ch. 410 ch. 845 ch. 1175

Leaving and returning

When Ren Zu inspects a Gu for hairy men and it proves to be failure Gu, Courage Gu flies out, calls Ren Zu a failure, and leaves. Ren Zu wants to chase it, but stays for another attempt at success Gu. ch. 845

Much later Ren Zu says he used to have Courage Gu as companion and that it is the friend of Faith Gu, but that after the hairy men and failure Gu it left him. Cognition Gu tells him to hide Fear Gu deep in his heart and move forward, saying courageous people are not fearless, only that they hide fear. Love Gu then stays with him and says that with love present he can summon Courage Gu. After he calls, Courage Gu flies to his side, lands in his heart with satisfaction at the aura of love and fear, and plays with Fear Gu there. With courage again, much of his fear dissipates and he can move on. ch. 1175

predicament tellings

When Ren Zu struggles to eat bitter heads from the Predicament, Courage Gu tells him not to fear bitterness, that suffering is temporary, and that fear of suffering makes suffering last for life. With that help he finishes the bitter heads. ch. 2041 In a later telling, while Tribulations attack, Courage Gu encourages him not to be afraid. ch. 2052 After Ren Zu dies in that stretch, Courage Gu and edge Gu fly away, saying he met the greatest predicament in his life. ch. 2053
