Suffering Gu swarm the roads inside the Door of Life and Death in The Legends of Ren Zu, and courage Gu is needed to face their torture.
Wisdom Gu tells Ren Zu that there are many suffering Gu inside the path of life, that he must enter from the road of death, and that he needs courage Gu so he will not fear the torture of suffering. ch. 410

Path of life
There are many more suffering Gu on the path of life than on the path of death. On the path of death they grow fewer the further Ren Zu walks; on the path of life every step draws more of them to obstruct him. Courage Gu warns that there are too many, that there is peace in death but life has endless suffering, and that guts are needed as well as courage. ch. 411
Both roads
A later legend stretch states that the Door of Life and Death has two routes, the road of life and the road of death, and that no matter which path it is there will be a lot of suffering Gu. To overcome their interference and enter deep into the door, courage Gu is needed. ch. 722

Fang Yuan’s own summary of the Door of Life and Death keeps suffering Gu on the road of life but reverses the three obstacles onto the road of death. ch. 1010 Another summary of wisdom Gu’s guidance to Ren Zu reverses it again, putting suffering Gu back on the road of death and the three obstacles on the road of life. ch. 2192
