Qi Zai tells Qi He that Qi clan’s ancestor was one of the Heaven Surveying Five Xiangs thousands of years ago. The five were publicly recognized Gu Immortal experts in Southern Border, each rank eight, who collaborated, explored white heaven and black heaven, and were famous even in the other four regions. Other rank eight Gu Immortals in the two heavens usually avoided them. Qi Zai names them Qi Xiang, Ni Xiang, Bai Xiang, Xue Xiang, and Chi Xiang, and says Qi clan cultivates qi path primarily because of Qi Xiang. Dozens of years later they disbanded after finding a huge secret in white heaven that only one person could obtain, then set a thousand-year bet whose rules barred the five from helping their descendants: whichever clan had the most Gu Immortals after a thousand years would win. Ties and further rounds kept the bet going for thousands of years after the ancestors died. Among them were lone immortals and demonic path members, not only righteous clan-builders. ch. 1035
Over the last few thousand years Qi Zai ranks the descendant lines: Qi clan is the most prosperous; Xue Xiang’s blood path descendants are almost wiped out; Chi Xiang’s descendants stay inside their immortal aperture and live like livestock with no urge to improve; Bai Xiang’s final bloodline traces have all died recently; Ni Xiang’s line still has Southern Border branches but no longer has Gu Immortals. ch. 1035 Related character detail sits on Qi Xiang, Ni Xiang, Xue Xiang, and Chi Xiang.
Ancient bet pressure
Qi clan is already in sight of victory on that ancient bet when a mysterious Gu Immortal appears at the final juncture, which Qi Zai treats as more urgent than investigating a dead Qi clan elder. ch. 1037
Paths and gatehouse
Fang Yuan names Qi Xiang, Bai Xiang, Xue Xiang, Ni Xiang, and Chi Xiang as the Heaven Surveying Five Xiangs and notes a gatehouse fused from all five. He assigns their paths as qi path, ice path, blood path, earth path, and food path respectively. Narration calls them a strong force that once took leadership of Southern Border’s Gu Immortal world. ch. 1637
Public grotto-heaven
Bai Ning Bing receives word that the Heaven Surveying Five Xiangs each donated a portion of their grotto-heavens to form a public grotto-heaven of five segments that share only the central mountain range, with the bet’s treasure at the center and resource points set along the way. Fighting in the central hall is suppressed by the Five Xiangs’ seal unless someone forcibly suppresses that power and damages the place. ch. 1638
Two heavens fame
Later narration says the Five Xiangs were united and dominated the two heavens, with high reputation in the five regions. ch. 1816
Heaven form prize
Heaven form, left by Thieving Heaven Demon Venerable, was obtained by the Heaven Surveying Five Xiangs, who made the thousand-year bet over it, and it eventually ends up in Fang Yuan’s hands. ch. 2226
