Inside the flesh chamber, a mouth spits out a small bone book explaining that the walls hide many Gu, each sealed behind teeth a lucky knock might open. Bai Ning Bing knocks first and wins the Flesh-bone Gu, a rank three healing Gu that rebuilds a corpse’s flesh and is prized as the usual partner to the far rarer rank four Rising Dead Gu. Delighted, Fang Yuan calls it exactly what he has been searching for. ch. 224
Bai Ning Bing offers to trade it for Fang Yuan’s Yang Gu, and when he refuses, she threatens to kill him outright and take the inheritance for herself. Fang Yuan calls the bluff: the Bai clan may already be on the stairs behind them, and without him she has no way through the inheritance’s branching paths. She backs down, unwilling to risk being stranded, though privately she still fears he will never hand over the Yang Gu even once his own cultivation reaches rank three, a promise she has come to expect him to break as easily as he breaks any other. ch. 224
With no other exit from the chamber, Fang Yuan wakes the unconscious Bai Sheng and Bai Hua, reasoning that the twins, as the inheritance’s true heirs, may open a path he cannot. Above ground, the pursuing Bai clan group finally emerges from the tunnels empty handed, having missed Fang Yuan’s trail somewhere along the way. Tie Dao Ku snaps a twig and starts reasoning aloud that the paths diverged somewhere around the second hall’s pillars, but Bai Clan Leader cuts him off mid sentence and orders the group back before he can finish. ch. 224
