Xia Fei Kuai’s challenge pits the clans against each other; Fang Yuan does not care about Wu clan’s reputation, but he must keep up his act to reach the super Gu formation and accepts, warning he would definitely lose against both Xia immortals together. Xia Fei Kuai says he alone will fight. They agree on a spar with a limit: Xia Fei Kuai attacks and Fang Yuan only defends, and Fang Yuan loses only if Xia Fei Kuai breaks his defense within ten moves. Both sides fly to a valley to avoid damaging Frosty Peak. Xia Fei Kuai, Southern Border’s famous rank seven expert, is surpassed in strength only slightly by Wu clan’s strongest rank seven, the secluded Wu Yu Bo. Xia clan had already used Immortal Yan Huang to defeat Wu Yu Bo by exploiting a flaw in his signature killer move; Wu Yu Bo is now in secluded cultivation. Before the fight starts, Fang Yuan stalls again, proposing that if he wins, Frosty Peak’s current status quo, favoring Wu clan, continues indefinitely. Xia Zhuo Mo objects that this would forfeit Xia clan’s advantage, and Xia Fei Kuai, reaching the same judgment on his own, refuses. Fang Yuan then declares the spar voided and turns to leave. Xia Fei Kuai accuses him of fleeing without fighting. Fang Yuan denies avoiding the spar and blames the Xia immortals for rejecting his terms, then offers a lesser condition: a five-year status quo instead of an indefinite one. Xia Zhuo Mo hesitates, suspicious of Fang Yuan’s motive, but Xia Fei Kuai agrees on his own authority and Xia Zhuo Mo reluctantly backs him. ch. 1309
Both sides confirm the terms. Fang Yuan immediately transforms into a huge divination tortoise that fills the valley, its shell densely marked. He skips the usual probing exchange, catching Xia Fei Kuai off guard, while Xia Zhuo Mo reads the tortoise shell’s toughness as a sign of strong defense. Xia Fei Kuai, uncertain what Wu Yi Hai’s specialty is even as Fang Yuan already knows his, opens with his first move.
