Footless Bird

Fang Yuan finds the Footless Bird as a quail-egg-sized black-and-white striped bone ball on a scarlet tongue inside the Grey Bone Scholar inheritance on Bai Gu mountain, after Bai Hua knocks the correct teeth from a wall mouth. ^{ch. 225} He and Bai Ning Bing later ride it to escape the Bai clan pursuit. ^{ch. 227}

Appearance

Unused, it is a quail-egg-sized bone ball covered with black and white stripes, like a zebra. ^{ch. 225} A second copy has the same inactive look: a ball of bone the size of a quail egg, with alternating black and white stripes like a zebra. ^{ch. 358}

When summoned it is a white bone bird with no flesh or blood. It has an eagle’s head, a crane’s body, a swallow’s tail, two pairs of wings, and no legs. The wings are thin bone pieces. ^{ch. 227}

Form

When summoned underfoot it is a white bone bird with no flesh or blood: eagle head, crane body, swallow tail, four wings, and no legs. ^{ch. 227} In inactive form it is the striped bone ball described above. ^{ch. 225}

Effect

It is a movement type Gu that can be used only once, with a large body able to fly thousands of miles. ^{ch. 225} Bai clan observers call it able to fly ten thousand miles in a day, and say that under rank five it is the number one flying steed, with few Gu able to match its speed. During the climb from the cliff, Fang Yuan’s primeval essence drops rapidly while Heavenly Essence Treasure Lotus keeps feeding his sea. ^{ch. 227}

Escape from Bai Gu mountain

Fang Yuan pulls Bai Ning Bing onto the bird as they fall from the cliff, then forces it to climb and outrun Bai clan pursuers, including an elder who burns himself with Human Torch Gu. The bird’s bone body helps it survive fire, but cracks spread through its wings and body during the chase. ^{ch. 227} After flying most of a day it can no longer continue; Fang Yuan lands it in a forest, and it is counted among the Gu destroyed in that pursuit. ^{ch. 228} Bai and Tie pursuers later treat that landing site as a search landmark when they split into groups tracking the pair toward Shang clan city. ^{ch. 293}
