Man tribe is the overlord of that place; entering the valley for the coming blizzard would require terms with them, and Man Duo’s proposal had been Ge tribe’s opening for that bargain. Fang Yuan reads the Ge tribe leader’s talk of the blizzard and the valley as an intent to seek refuge with Man tribe. ^{ch. 440}

Man tribe owned Hong Yan valley, had won battles in recent years, and had expanded greatly. It had also absorbed Shi tribe, and Shi Wu from that tribe served Man tribe as an external elder. ^{ch. 442}

Ge tribe leader tells Ge Guang that Man tribe means to devour Ge tribe, using Ge Yao’s case as a clean excuse to send troops, and that Man Tu would have struck if Chang Shan Yin’s presence had not blocked a blind accusation. Fang Yuan reads the same contest as Man Duo seeking tribe-leader power through a Ge tribe marriage while Man Tu wanted Ge tribe itself, and as Man tribe still strongest of the three sides after a banquet setback. He also places Man tribe as a large tribe, not a super tribe, which is why it did not simply attack Ge tribe outright. ^{ch. 449}
