Poison beard wolves are hairless black wolves with enamel-like skin and two long moustaches, commonly seen on the northern plains, where a pack of hundreds under a poison beard wolf king hunts the young girl Ge Yao.
Poison beard wolves are commonly seen in the northern plains. Unlike other wolves they have no fur at all: their bodies are black and their skin looks covered in a layer of enamel. They have no ears, only two long moustaches five inches long, which sway beside the body when they run and stand straight when they fight. A poison beard wolf king howls in the night and a pack of a few hundred shoots out after it, splits in two, and closes a ring around the young girl Ge Yao, circling rather than attacking at first because they are afraid of her Gu worms. One wolf loses its patience and charges as a lump of black shadow, and a water arrow pierces its head. When the king howls again the whole pack charges, and a flash of jade-green light makes the leading wolves shut their eyes and howl in pain, knock into one another, and fall into chaos. This wolf king is a hundred beast king carrying two rank two Gu worms, acid Gu and poison needle Gu. Acid Gu lets it shoot green acid from its mouth that corrodes flesh, steel, and rock, and poison needle Gu lets it shoot poison needles. Fang Yuan has to strike it twice with his golden dragon Gu to kill it, where one blow would have done in the southern border, and the corpse is still intact at the end. With the wolf king dead, the pack breaks and flees several miles away in a few breaths. ch. 426
Packs against Ge Yao and Fang Yuan
Ge Yao says her big stomach horse was eaten by poison beard wolves, with her primeval stones and rations stored on it. Hundreds of them appear and many charge at her; she kills three at once and injures five or six more, and a dozen come charging at her in the same moment. Fang Yuan charges through the pack in a layer of golden light armor, every collision sending large numbers of them flying, and whichever wolf touches his fists or kicks has its skeleton shattered. The wolf king of this pack is very strong, lightning flickering around its whole body, shooting out green venom now and then, and so fast it leaves an afterimage. Fang Yuan keeps moving and uses the ordinary wolves to hinder the king instead of meeting it head on. At last he smashes its defense with a beast phantom and beats to death this king, which was close to becoming a thousand beast king. ch. 427 Ge Yao repels a poison beard wolf pack again and says the wolves should get lost. ch. 428
Poisonous grassland
Deep in the poisonous grassland the purple fog thickens until even poison resistant wild beasts such as poison beard wolves rarely appear. Creatures at the lowest rung of Zi Du blessed land slip out when its entrance opens every few years, which is why large numbers of poison beard wolves live in the poisonous grassland, rampaging around the outskirts of the poisoned lands. About a hundred of them pounce on Fang Yuan and Ge Yao. Fang Yuan subdues their hundred beast wolf king with a rank two wolf enslavement Gu, and the pack it leads becomes his, the second wolf group he has subdued. ch. 433
Wolves at the bonfire
A large group of poison beard wolves, drawn by the bonfire, rapidly approaches Fang Yuan and Ge Yao, and wolves resting beside the fire clash with them in an intense battle. Ge Yao calls the incoming wolf group a thousand beast group. Ge Yao takes on its thousand beast wolf king alone and returns with its head, and with their king lost the invading wolves collapse and flee. ch. 435
Commanded by Fang Yuan
Fang Yuan uses poison beard wolves as an ambush for a male hump wolf, and a large group surrounds it from every side. Under his manipulation they do not fight the hump wolf head on but work together, taking turns to drain its stamina. Around the hump wolf lie sixty or so poison beard wolf corpses, while Fang Yuan reckons he would need to sacrifice only thirty of them to kill it, but he wants it alive. Wolf smoke Gu heals the injured poison beard wolves along with the hump wolf, and on Fang Yuan’s will the wolves eat the corpses of the dead. Three days earlier Fang Yuan killed Ge Yao and ordered the wolves to devour her corpse, and her only remains are likely what the poison beard wolves excrete. ch. 436 Fang Yuan later leaves the poisonous grassland riding the hump wolf’s back, surrounded by restless poison beard wolves, which are adapted to hunting in the dark and lose much of their battle strength in sunlight. He thinks the group is only temporary and will be eliminated sooner or later. ch. 437
Sunlight and the wind wolf king
A poison beard wolf pack under Fang Yuan’s will charges at wind wolves that have encircled Ge tribe Gu Masters, and the Gu Masters ask why poison beard wolves are outside the poison grassland, where they believe the wolves only move around. Ge Guang counts fewer than a thousand of them, and another Gu Master notes that they are weaker under sunlight and slightly inferior to the wind wolves. Fang Yuan howls like a wolf, and poison beard wolves within eight hundred steps turn frenzied and gain twice their battle strength; the Gu Masters recognise the rank four wolf howl Gu, which can raise a wolf pack’s battle strength for a time. Over a dozen wind wolves are sacrificed for the life of one poison beard wolf, and the wind wolves retreat. Fang Yuan’s poison beard wolf kings are only hundred beast kings while the wind wolf king is a thousand beast king, yet several of them form a barricade that it cannot break through. ch. 438
Ge Yao’s death
A Gu Master reports that Ge Yao’s torn clothes were found in the poison grassland and that poison beard wolves killed her. ch. 442 Fang Yuan tells the Gu Masters that he subdued many poison beard wolves after leaving the poison grassland, slept on their fur on cold nights, and that one of them likely ate the leader’s daughter and passed the smoke to him. Chase smoke Gu shows that a few of the poison beard wolves carry much thicker smoke than Fang Yuan does. Ge tribe leader takes them for his daughter’s murderer, and Fang Yuan hands those wolves over to him to deal with. ch. 447
Place in Fang Yuan’s wolf army
Fang Yuan holds poison beard wolves and wind wolves, and he notes that poison beard wolves are hard to replenish and, being weak in sunlight, are destined to be eliminated. ch. 442 Man tribe schemers count a thousand poison beard wolves among Fang Yuan’s trump cards. ch. 450 A poison beard wolf king is among the hundred beast wolf kings in the army Fang Yuan builds on a battlefield. ch. 453 Yan tribe Gu Masters read poison beard wolf footprints among the wolf tracks and conclude from the mix of wolves that a Gu Master controls the group. ch. 469 Fang Yuan’s wolf group includes a few poison beard wolves obtained from the poisonous grassland, and he later buys five thousand more. ch. 476
Hu Immortal blessed land
Because of the poison beard wolves, Fang Yuan also chooses earth skin pigs, which he puts in the eastern part of Hu Immortal blessed land. ch. 476 Fang Yuan sends poison beard wolves and water wolves to Hu Immortal blessed land through the stargate. ch. 477 The number of earth skin pigs there would be thirty to forty percent higher were it not for water wolves and poison beard wolves. ch. 490 With poisonous blood now contaminating Hu Immortal blessed land, which did not suit poison beard wolves before, Fang Yuan plans to buy a small number to form a catfish effect with the blood stripe foxes, and small quantities of them come to live among the western part’s blood lakes. ch. 826 In Fang Yuan’s immortal aperture, a huge grassland whose blood sickle grass and red axe flowers came from Hu Immortal blessed land holds poison beard wolf groups beside fox groups, water wolf groups, and earth skin boar groups. ch. 1291
