Shang Bu Li is Shang clan's number one general under Shang Yan Fei, titled Two faced man, first shown as a rank four clan elder who controls the clan slave trade in Shang Clan City.
Wei Yang points him out to Fang Yuan at a Shang auction: neither fat nor thin, not tall or short, with a common face split bright red on the left and pale blue on the right from the center of the nose. Narration titles him Two faced man, names him the number one general under Shang Yan Fei, and places him at rank four with Gu worms of fire and ice. The same introduction never names a fire path or ice path affiliation beyond those Gu worms. He is a Shang clan elder and the clan’s most important subject, and in Shang Clan City his authority sits above Wei Yang and above the ten young masters. ch. 306
Appearance
Shang Bu Li is neither fat nor thin, and neither tall nor short. He has a common face, but his features are strange. The left of his face is bright red, and the right is pale blue. The two colors split his face into two portions from the center of his nose. ch. 306
Number one general and slave trade
As Shang Yan Fei’s number one subject he controls the entire Shang slave trade market, while young masters only hold pieces of clan business. ch. 306 Later narration repeats that Shang clan slave trade is handled personally by him as head of the five clan elders, and that the post stays with Shang clansmen rather than external elders because the trade is too profitable. ch. 329 In the auction hall he walks slowly under greetings and bootlicking until Doctor Su Shou snaps at him; he bows at once, keeps his eyes off her, and only laughs bitterly after she passes, because her standing with Shang Yan Fei puts her beyond his reach. ch. 306
After Yi Tian Mountain
At Shang Liang Mountain he stands rank four peak stage and opens Shang Xin Ci’s succession ceremony after Shang Yan Fei’s death in the battle of Yi Tian Mountain. Of Shang Yan Fei’s five great generals only he and Wan Qian Shan remain; he still controls the slave trade, while Wan Qian Shan handles resource gathering, and Zhou Quan reads both as strong internal threats to the new clan leader. ch. 1072
Names in the text
In a later Southern Border battlefield stretch, narration names Shang Guai Li as the rank seven Shang clan Gu Immortal fighting Hei Lou Lan, then one dialogue tag prints Shang Bu Li as the injured speaker before the next lines return to Shang Guai Li and show Guai Li burned to death. ch. 1354 The chapter 1354 print of the name is a slip for Shang Guai Li, not this mortal Shang Bu Li appearing as a Gu Immortal: the same name is still a market official resigning in chapter 2122. ch. 1354 ch. 2122
Market resignation
After Shang Xin Ci bans the slave trade, he is shifted to managing Shang Liang Mountain’s Gu worm market instead. When counterfeit Gu sweep that market he reports late, then resigns on the spot; Shang Xin Ci approves, and he leaves laughing. Shang Tuo Hai tells her the delay was deliberate: Shang Bu Li has already been pulled into the fake Gu conspiracy and is the first to defect. Narration then notes Zhu Ba and Wan Qian Shan resign of their own accord as further defections follow. ch. 2122 After that resignation Shang Xin Ci hands Shang Liang Mountain market management to Shang Chi Wen. ch. 2126
