At a banquet Chang Biao presents the rescue as a hero saving a beauty and says his daughter’s heart has fixed on that young hero. Guests note that Chang Li is not his own daughter by birth, but that he raised her from youth and treats her as a beloved daughter, so marrying her would make Chang Biao Ma Hong Yun’s father-in-law. ch. 578 Chang Biao and Ma Ying Jie later set the engagement, and Ma Ying Jie tells Ma Hong Yun the first day of the next month will be their celebration. ch. 579

Ma Hong Yun calls her his wife Xiao Li. Chang Biao had married his adopted daughter to him to coax Ma Ying Jie, and she becomes Ma Hong Yun’s wife. Giant Sun’s will brings her and Zhao Lian Yun into Eighty-Eight True Yang Building when Ma Hong Yun is pressed to become an owner of Imperial Court blessed land. ch. 613
Giant Sun’s will later states she never sincerely loved Ma Hong Yun: Chang Biao treated her as a political bargaining chip aimed at Ma Ying Jie, and after Chang Biao’s death she stayed by Ma Hong Yun for lack of backing, while his rise to rank three and elder status still gave her a good life.
