Hei Xiu Yi is a rank four upper stage defense Gu Master of Hei tribe, one of the three commanders of the black banner troops under Hei Lou Lan.
At Yu Tian heroes assembly in Northern Plains, Hei Lou Lan calls Hei Xiu Yi after Mo Shi Kuang smashes Viper Prince, and sends the thin, expressionless Gu Master to teach Mo Shi Kuang a lesson. Hei Xiu Yi arms himself with black armor light, a dim green halo, fifty-six flying bone shields, and nine greyish-blue ghost faces before he reaches the stage. A Liu tribe speaker names him one of the three commanders of the black banner troops, a rank four upper stage Gu Master specialized in defense. Hei Lou Lan treats him as part of the direct family line and as the Hei tribe supreme elder’s grand-nephew’s son, and judges that losing him would cut black banner battle strength by at least twenty percent. ch. 498
Appearance
He is a thin man. He answers expressionlessly, and his gaze is as indifferent as ice. As he walks, a black light blossoms and condenses into armor that firmly covers him. A dim green halo flies over his head. Fifty-six flying bone shields hover beside him, and nine greyish-blue ghost faces hover around him. The armor is black iron like, and that black iron armor had made him famous. ch. 498 He stands clothed in black and has an unshaken expression. ch. 512
Yu Tian duel
Hei Xiu Yi takes Mo Shi Kuang’s early fist qi without falling, repairs cracked flying bone shields with the green halo, and returns absorbed fist qi through the ghost faces. When Mo Shi Kuang kicks with a hill-sized qi foot, the shields, halo, ghost faces, and black armor fail in turn, and Hei Xiu Yi is pressed into the ground at his last breath until Hei Lou Lan’s side pulls him out of the chaos. ch. 498
Guarding Chang Shan Yin
Hei Lou Lan later places him to guard Wolf King Chang Shan Yin as Hei Lou Lan’s expert, one of the three black banner elite troop commanders, and a defense specialist. Facing Dong Po Kuang and Bian Si Xuan together, he holds for many moves with the same complementing defense set, then cuts defense to save himself as primeval essence runs low, and jumps off the twin-headed rhino when Bian Si Xuan breaks through toward Fang Yuan. ch. 512 Fang Yuan later notes that Hei Xiu Yi deserted in the face of danger and that water image Gu was what kept him alive, and he refuses internal friction over a trusted Hei Lou Lan general. ch. 515 Fang Yuan takes a later supply-camp Gu recipe gift as Hei Lou Lan’s goodwill after that desertion was left alone. ch. 517
Flying bear clash
During the flying bear phantom battle he urges Lord Chang Shan Yin to step in early. Fang Yuan answers with a monstrous arm that smashes three defense lines, crushes Hei Xiu Yi’s ribs, and leaves him unconscious and without battle strength in a mound. The same stretch restates that he was once sent to Fang Yuan as protection and had abandoned that mission earlier, and that as a black banner commander the public blow risks a break with Hei Lou Lan. ch. 583
