At the academy year-end examination, students name her with Gu Yue Qing Shu and Chi Shan as rising-star Gu Masters, and her Mo family group is the largest present. ^{ch. 82} Later wording treats that camp as the Mo faction’s Mo Yan group beside Qing Shu’s clan-leader group and Chi Shan’s Chi faction group. ^{ch. 87}

She is rank two upper stage while Qing Shu is already rank two peak, ^{ch. 104} and crowd talk at the red steel Relic Gu bidding treats her and Chi Shan as the favorites who could match Qing Shu if they obtained the Relic. ^{ch. 113} Fang Yuan later ranks Chi Shan, Mo Yan, and Qing Shu together as fighters above his own early rank two strength, noting that each holds at least three battle Gu and hidden trump cards while he still has only two. ^{ch. 107} Of those three groups, Mo Yan keeps an investigative Gu Master stronger than Chi She’s Snake Communication Gu, and she has single-handedly completed clan wolf-den investigation missions many times. ^{ch. 133} Under wolf-tide pressure after Qing Shu’s death, she and Chi Shan advance from rank two upper stage to peak stage. ^{ch. 145} At Alliance slope she answers Xiong Jiao Man’s challenge by name and accepts the fight. ^{ch. 126}

After Mo Bei dies in the wolf tide, clan rules that favor male inheritance leave the Mo faction without an inheritor. Even if Mo Yan later reaches rank three and becomes an elder, her assets would not stand for the faction, and marriage would move them under a husband’s name. Mo Chen publicly claims he detained Fang Yuan for Mo Yan’s sake, saying she had begged him not to let Fang Yuan die on the battlefield, and offers to accept stripping of elder status. That cover is stretched and hard for the other elders to believe. ^{ch. 172}

He then presses Fang Yuan as the son-in-law who could inherit Mo faction assets through marriage to Mo Yan. ^{ch. 172} Fang Yuan answers with extreme bride-price demands, including a hundred thousand primeval stones and ten rare rank three Gu, and is chased out. ^{ch. 174} He later returns to re-bargain, settles for a cut price with forty thousand stones in advance plus Pig Iron Gu and Afterlife Grass Gu, and leaves with the condition that marriage talk waits until those goods arrive and that he will not guarantee allegiance before then. Mo Yan accepts the marriage as a family sacrifice while still hating Fang Yuan and feeling no affection for him. ^{ch. 176}

When Fang Yuan begins killing Gu Yue clansmen inside the blood barrier to feed Blood Skull Gu, Gu Yue Mo Yan rushes him and is split in half by his Chainsaw Golden Centipede. ^{ch. 198}
