Gao Wan is a middle-aged mortal servant of the Gu Yue clan's Mo family on Qing Mao Mountain, left overnight at the school hostel to watch Fang Yuan after Mo Yan's confrontation.
He first appears at an inn as the muscular middle-aged Mo family servant who tries to detain Fang Yuan until Gu Yue Mo Yan arrives. Inn talk already treats him as a trained mortal who may beat a rank one initial stage Gu Master in a physical fight, and he has served the Mo family for over a decade. ch. 32 That household sits in the Gu Yue clan on Qing Mao Mountain in the Southern Border. ch. 4 ch. 32
Appearance
He is a muscular middle-aged man in the clothing of a family servant. He folds up his sleeves and shows well-toned muscular forearms. Both arms are large and full of scars, with thick protruding veins, and the forearms are thicker than Fang Yuan’s legs. His tall and muscular figure mismatches the groveling he shows when Mo Yan arrives. ch. 32
Mo family servant
The text names him Gao Wan when Mo Yan ignores his groveling greeting and later chooses him as the one servant she may bring into the school hostel under clan rules. ch. 32 He is not a Gu Master and not a Gu Yue clansman by surname; later narration calls him an outsider servant whose life is cheap beside a master’s. ch. 34 ch. 38 Mo Bei remembers him as an energetic bootlicking lackey who had sparred with him and put effort into fighting skills. ch. 36 The hostel fight itself shows fighting skill honed across decades of training, and after the cold night numbness fades his punches speed up while Fang Yuan’s teenage stamina collapses first. ch. 35
Overnight watch
After Mo Yan fails to force Fang Yuan out of the dormitory, she leaves Gao Wan to watch the door through the cold night. He threatens Fang Yuan to come out, kowtow, and apologise to the young Miss, and he treats C grade talent as capped near rank two and no match for the Mo family alone. ch. 33 Fang Yuan’s reading places Gao Wan near the limits of mortal physical prowess: enough to kill a rank one initial stage Gu Master and still threaten rank one middle stage, while Gao Wan dare not use deadly force on a Gu Yue clansman. ch. 34
Death and settlement
When Fang Yuan breaks the hostel ban and uses Moonlight Gu, Gao Wan’s arms are cut, he flees calling for help, and clan guards refuse to save a servant while fearing harm to Fang Yuan. Fang Yuan beheads him with two moonblades; Gao Wan dies in the school hostel, and Fang Yuan later dices the corpse into a wooden box left at the Mo family’s back door. ch. 35 ch. 36
Before Gu Yue Mo Chen, Mo Yan calls Gao Wan only a servant whose death does not matter beside Mo reputation; Mo Chen instead labels Gao Wan as a servant who defied his superiors and deserved death, confines Mo Yan for seven days, compensates Fang Yuan with thirty primeval stones, and gives Gao Wan’s family fifty stones before expelling them. ch. 37 Fang Yuan’s own reading is that Gao Wan’s death is not the stake; the Mo family behind him is, and the minced box is meant as both compromise and threat so the family will not pursue the kill. ch. 38
Later comparisons still use Gao Wan as the known Mo servant fighter: Wang Er is ranked much stronger than him, and Fang Yuan’s killing of Gao Wan is recalled as the killing of a mortal servant whose life was cheap as grass. ch. 66 ch. 90
