Chapter 483

Bei tribe leader Bei Cao Chuan watches the battle from hiding with eleven Bei and Zheng tribe elders at his side, all of them summoned for a single purpose: killing Wolf King Chang Shan Yin. He keeps holding his elders back. Chang Shan Yin is too well guarded, with the wind wolf myriad beast king always near him, and Bei Cao Chuan judges they will get only one chance to strike before the wolves close around them for good. When the elders press him to move while Ge tribe’s Gu Masters are recovering their primeval essence, and again once Pei tribe’s wall finally breaks, he refuses both times. Pei Yan Fei’s Golden Rainbow Strike, wounding the turtleback myriad wolf king, wins the watching elders’ open admiration, and they credit Bei Cao Chuan’s judgment for holding them back until now. Then Chang Shan Yin begins withdrawing his wolves, well before Bei Cao Chuan’s planned opening has arrived, and the shock breaks Bei Cao Chuan’s composure in front of his own elders. He knows the Wolf King still holds every advantage, an unhurt wind wolf king included, and he knows that if the retreat succeeds, Bei and Zheng tribe’s captured camps, along with everyone and everything in them, go with it. Rather than watch his own tribe vanish, he abandons patience, tells his elders that Chang Shan Yin is out of steam and trying to flee, and leads the charge himself. ^{ch. 483}

Fang Yuan is not surprised. He reads this ambush correctly and shapes the retreat around avoiding it, leaving the ordinary wild wolves behind as a rearguard to burn through the attackers’ primeval essence while the beast kings and elite wolves pull back. Bei Cao Chuan’s group soon runs short and stalls, and in his fury he calls out to Pei Yan Fei to finish what he started. Pei Yan Fei, who already suspects Bei Cao Chuan threw his tribe away as bait, chooses to press on anyway: he will not let Ge tribe turn tonight’s escape into fame at three tribes’ expense, and Pei tribe’s own losses demand answering. Fang Yuan dismounts the white-eyes wolf and switches to another steed, and the white-eyes wolf steps forward to stand beside the wind wolf and turtleback myriad wolf kings, its strength that of a myriad beast king. Both Pei Yan Fei and Bei Cao Chuan break off rather than risk facing three myriad-beast-king-strength opponents at once, and Ge tribe’s army withdraws untouched.
