The Story of the Sea God and Mermaid

Xie Han Mo rejects Fang Yuan taking the blame without hesitation, though it would resolve the situation. Three days later she receives information that Qiu Shuang, the extremely popular candidate Frost Tide tribe leader supports, is no longer pure. Only virgins may compete for the saintess position. Xie Han Mo says the information is definitely reliable, since the grand elder gave it to her. Fang Yuan understands that Xie Han Mo became saintess because the grand elder, the fairest and most lenient of the higher-ups, backs her. That leniency let everyone become corrupted, and the support is an attempt to correct it. Qiu Shuang is investigated, and her story is exposed: she really has lost her virginity. ch. 1665

The Merman Sacred Court cannot keep the news secret, and its furious higher-ups rapidly decide the punishment. A few days later, Qiu Shuang’s head falls to the ground and she dies. Frost Tide tribe leader blames Xie Han Mo. Bu Su Lian, a mermaid noble lady, tells him the higher-ups will no longer give him attention. He replies that his allies will still have to work with him. Bu Su Lian agrees but asks how he will beat Xie Han Mo with their best pawn destroyed, and he says she will see his methods in a few days. A few days later, Dong Lei, one of Qiu Shuang’s followers, offers to take Qiu Shuang’s place, which tribe rules allow between sisters, and onlookers name her the pawn Frost Tide tribe leader prepared. ch. 1665

In the legend behind the Sea God Ceremony, the first mermen lived in an Eastern Sea fishing village until a huge sea beast nearly destroyed it with a tsunami. The mermaid Ah Qing prayed to the Sea God, who promised to chase the beast away for three satisfactory songs. She sang two, but after two days and nights she had no strength left for the third. She told her sister Ah Ya and died from exhaustion. Ah Ya, very upset, sang the third song in her place, and the Sea God was pleased and the beast left. ch. 1665

To choose a saintess, the mermen set up many tests, but the final round is always a singing competition on an altar-like Gu house. Each contestant sings three times, and the results choose the sole saintess. The earlier tests only eliminate, and if all contestants are eliminated, the position stays empty. ch. 1665
