Soul Burial Toad

Fang Yuan takes a burial soul toad from his aperture while arranging rockmen labor after the fox battles on Dang Hun Mountain. It is also called soul burial toad. ^{ch. 413}

Appearance

It is palm sized and grey. Its back is covered in small warts, and its large eyes flash with a weird, gloomy green light. ^{ch. 413}

Form and rank

It is a rank four Gu used to store things, and one of the Gu worms left by Hu Immortal. ^{ch. 413} It is again listed among assistance type Gu Hu Immortal left within Dang Hun Mountain. ^{ch. 415}

Effect

It can store only souls. Its belly inflates as it sucks them in, and deflates once those souls are removed. ^{ch. 413} Later narration also calls it a storage Gu used to store souls. ^{ch. 616}

Fang Yuan uses it to collect souls from the rockmen who died fighting the fox groups, then places those souls on Dang Hun Mountain to breed new gutstones. ^{ch. 413} After killing Ge Yao, he has the toad swallow her soul; that soul is sent into the blessed land and crushed by Dang Hun Mountain. ^{ch. 436} During the Yan tribe siege and camp attack he keeps collecting battlefield souls with it, then releases them on Dang Hun Mountain so the mountain turns them into nutrient and, next day, more guts Gu. ^{ch. 474} From the start of the Imperial Court contest he again uses soul burial toad to gather souls for the same mountain, as long as Dang Hun Mountain is not fully dead. ^{ch. 572} The toad again holds human and beast souls mostly gathered from battlefields, and those souls become large numbers of guts Gu through Dang Hun Mountain. ^{ch. 616}

Naming variation

“Soul burial Gu” is among the most important Gu then in Fang Yuan’s aperture, beside stargate Gu, moving perspective cup Gu, east window Gu, and instant success Gu. ^{ch. 504} The short name soul burial Gu omits the word toad. Chapters that describe the palm-sized grey toad use burial soul toad, soul burial toad, or soul burial toad Gu. ^{ch. 413 ch. 474 ch. 572} The novel never states that the short name and the toad are the same Gu.

Ownership

The toad begins as Hu Immortal’s leftover Gu on Dang Hun Mountain, then sits in Fang Yuan’s kit. ^{ch. 413 ch. 415} Burial soul toad is still listed among Gu kept in Hu Immortal blessed land rather than only in his aperture. ^{ch. 581} Before Fang Yuan leaves the blessed land again for northern plains, he hands burial soul toad to Little Hu Immortal. ^{ch. 616}

It is a storage Gu and an assistance type Gu. The cited chapters do not assign it a cultivation path, name a feeding method, or give a refinement recipe.
