Entering rank one
Opening the aperture confers rank one. In the Gu Yue clan that happens at the Awakening Ceremony: the walk through the flower sea measures talent, and a child who can walk far enough leaves able to cultivate. ch. 4 ch. 5 With the coagulation of the primeval sea, those students are rank one initial stage Gu Masters. ch. 7 The primeval sea and aperture mechanics are covered separately.
Gu follow the same nine levels. Gu Masters at rank one generally use rank one Gu; higher Gu demand a heavy price and often cost more to feed than a newcomer can afford. ch. 8
Talent ceilings on the climb
Talent grade sets ordinary reach. At the ceremony the academy elder states expected timelines: a D grade talent raised for three years can become a rank one senior Gu Master; a C grade talent usually reaches rank two in two years; a B grade talent reaches rank three in six to seven years; an A grade talent can reach rank four in about ten years. ch. 4
The same elder later restates ceilings by how much of the aperture the sea fills. D grade usually stops between rank one and rank two. C grade usually stops at rank two, with a small chance of rank three initial stage. B grade can reach rank three or four. A grade can reach rank five. ch. 7
Essence by rank
Higher rank means denser essence, not only a higher label. Green copper primeval essence belongs to rank one, red iron to rank two, and white silver to rank three. ch. 22 One portion of red iron equals ten of green copper, and one portion of white silver equals ten of red iron. ch. 26 A rank four Gu Master has yellow gold primeval essence and is treated as absurd fighting power in early Southern Border terms: within Gu Yue clan only the clan leader is rank four when a visiting rank four merchant arrives. ch. 55
Beyond rank five
Gu Masters up to rank five are mortals; rank six are immortals. ch. 101 Crossing that divide is covered on immortal ascension.
Rank nine title
Only Gu Masters who reach rank nine are respected as Venerables. On the righteous path they are Immortal Venerables; on the demonic path they are Demonic Venerables. ch. 187 The rest of the higher ladder is on ranks and realms.
Rank five peak
Gu Masters at rank five peak stage are at the peak of the mortal world, an emperor among Gu Masters. While rank six Immortal Gu are each one of a kind, rank five Gu are already rare and barely circulate. For many at that height, the stated goal is to break away from mortal and charge through to rank six, thereby gaining a longer life. ch. 373
Gu Yue clan history already treats the rung as rare: the academy can name only two rank five masters, and the fourth clan head is remembered as someone who might have reached rank six if not for Flower Wine Monk’s sneak attack. That same lesson calls rank six and above legends; the clan has never had a rank six Gu Master. ch. 7
Purple crystal stages
Gu Masters at rank five have purple crystal primeval essence. Initial stage is light purple, middle stage violet purple, upper stage deep purple, and peak stage crystal purple. ch. 379
