D grade is the lowest step of the four talent grades from A to D. It marks the smallest usable primeval sea and a cultivation ceiling the Gu Yue academy places between rank one and rank two.
Natural talent for opening and filling an aperture is graded on a four-step scale from A down to D. D grade sits at the bottom of that scale among youths who still open an aperture. Below it there is no cultivation talent at all: the Awakening Ceremony walk ends before ten steps, and the youth remains ordinary clan labor. ch. 4 ch. 5
How the grade is measured
On Qing Mao Mountain, the Awakening Ceremony measures talent by how far a fifteen-year-old walks into the moon orchid flower sea while Hope Gu enter the body. Fang Yuan states the bands used there: below ten steps means no cultivation talent, ten to twenty is D grade, twenty to thirty C grade, thirty to forty B grade, and forty to fifty A grade. ch. 5
In the Gu Yue session that opens the story, the flower sea returns a number of C and D grade talents among the youths who qualify, while about half the walkers show no talent. ch. 4 D grade is therefore the lowest band that still produces a Gu Master, not a label for failure.
What D grade governs
The grade governs how much of the aperture the primeval sea fills, and therefore how much essence the Gu Master holds and how fast that essence recovers. ch. 7 ch. 10 The academy elder states that a D grade talent’s primeval sea takes up about two to three layers of the aperture, and that the highest promotion reachable is from rank one to rank two. ch. 7 Clan expectation talk earlier places a D grade youth raised for three years as a rank one senior Gu Master and the foundation of the family. ch. 4
Academy fieldwork later treats D grade students as the weakest band in group hunts: even working together they take only a few wild-boar tusks compared with B and C grade peers. ch. 77 Higher grades hold more essence and recover it faster; primeval stones remain the outside tool for closing that gap. ch. 10
