Natural talent for becoming a Gu Master is measured on a four-step scale from A grade to D grade. ^{ch. 4} The grade is not a social title. It is the limit on how much of the aperture the primeval sea can fill, and it sets how fast that essence recovers on its own. ^{ch. 7 ch. 10} Clan talk and academy teaching name the same ladder talent or primeval talent. ^{ch. 4 ch. 6}

How the grade is measured

On Qing Mao Mountain, the Awakening Ceremony measures talent by how far a fifteen-year-old walks into the moon orchid flower sea while Hope Gu enter the body. Fang Yuan states the bands used there: below ten steps means no cultivation talent, ten to twenty is D grade, twenty to thirty C grade, thirty to forty B grade, and forty to fifty A grade. ^{ch. 5} Not everyone has that talent at all. In ordinary talk, five in ten people may qualify; the Gu Yue clan runs higher, about six in ten, because of the first generation clan head’s bloodline. ^{ch. 4}

Outward gifts such as intelligence, memory, or strength can look like high primeval talent and still fail the ceremony. The walk decides the grade. ^{ch. 6}

What the grade governs

The academy elder states the sea fill and the ordinary cultivation ceiling for each band. D grade fills about two to three layers of the aperture and tops out between rank one and rank two. C grade fills four to five layers, usually stops at rank two, and only a small lucky share reaches rank three initial stage. B grade fills six to seven layers and can reach rank three, even rank four. A grade fills eight to nine layers and is treated as fit to reach rank five. ^{ch. 7}

Clan expectation talk before and during the ceremony places the same grades on a social ladder: a D grade youth raised for three years becomes a rank one senior Gu Master and clan foundation; a C grade after about two years usually becomes a rank two senior and clan backbone; a B grade is cared for as a future elder and, with six to seven years of training, a rank three Gu Master; an A grade draws the heaviest investment and is projected toward rank four in about ten years, high enough to contest the clan head seat. ^{ch. 4}

Recovery rate tracks the same gap. Higher talent holds more essence and recovers it faster; primeval stones can offset a lower grade by feeding the sea from outside. ^{ch. 8 ch. 10} Advancement pace talk later puts a C grade youth at roughly twice a B grade and four times an A grade when rising to middle stage on talent alone. ^{ch. 50}
