At the battle zone in Shang clan city’s third inner city, Wei Yang invites Fang and Bai to spar as a routine way Shang clan tests outside talent, taking on both of them at once; keeping a low profile, he uses his own clan elder authority to seal the battle stage against outside watchers, leaving only Little Xiao. Fang and Bai commit spiral bone spear Gu against him together; Wei Yang answers behind a golden light battle armor that holds against it, and Fang Yuan, carried in on jumping grass and shielded by canopy Gu’s white armour and three circling bone shields, lands a punch that sends Wei Yang flying without breaking either the armor or his broadsword light Gu. ch. 265

Reporting to Shang Yan Fei, Wei Yang calls Fang and Bai geniuses who will surpass him given time, reads them as at least rank three with A grade aptitude fighting on innate battle sense and teamwork despite an incomplete Gu set, and names them a matched pair worth recruiting. Shang Yan Fei’s interest in the two visibly deepens, and he orders Wei Yang to keep attending them and gauge whether they can be recruited. ch. 267
