An immortal zombie is a Gu Immortal whose body has turned into a zombie. The immortal aperture dies, cultivation stagnates, and immortal essence no longer regenerates.
While holding six arm heavenly zombie king against Giant Sun’s will, zombie speckles spread on Fang Yuan as death energy invades. Giant Sun’s will says that once the balance of life and death energy breaks, Fang Yuan will turn into a real zombie, neither human nor ghost, with cultivation stagnant forever. Mo Yao’s will urges him to stop before the form becomes permanent and hard to revert. Fang Yuan continues and turns into a six arm heavenly zombie king completely, no longer needing Gu worms to keep the form. ch. 643
Dead apertures
After returning to Hu Immortal blessed land, Fang Yuan finds his body filled with death energy and fully turned into a zombie: the body knows no fatigue, but the soul still tires and can be injured. His first aperture is dead silence, dry, and unable to produce primeval essence. The strength path immortal aperture has also turned grey as a dead land. He names this the price of turning into a zombie. Cultivation stagnates and cannot advance while he remains a zombie. A zombie body has no lifespan limit in the usual sense, yet the soul can still be damaged and a stronger foe can still destroy the body, so Gu Masters and Gu Immortals take this path only as a last resort. Cognitive speed also falls: thoughts move more slowly after the change. ch. 650

Common causes
Fang Yuan explains to Tai Bai Yun Sheng that Zombie Alliance higher-ups are immortal zombies like him. For the most part, these immortal zombies are Gu Immortals who reached the end of their lifespan and had no choice but to turn into zombies to prolong life. Their immortal apertures are dead; they cannot produce immortal essence nor absorb heaven and earth qi, and after some time their blessed land starts shrinking and crumbling. Battle strength often cannot match normal Gu Immortals, though certain immortal zombies are exceptions. One purpose of Zombie Alliance is mutual research into methods to regain a live physical body. ch. 653
Dead blessed land costs
Gu Ye tells Fang Yuan that blessed lands of immortal zombies are already dead and cannot be operated or produce immortal essence, so immortal zombies must rely on external resources even more than living Gu Immortals. Connecting heaven Gu and hole earth Gu need living blessed lands or grotto-heavens to spend heavenly power; dead apertures cannot, so immortal zombies cannot use those ordinary transport links. ch. 739 This page is the cultivation state.
