Peng Da is a rank two Gu Master who wakes in Western Desert's wolf desert after desert wolves attack, remembering a life of programming before this body.
A bearded middle aged caravan leader named Mo Li slaps him awake in the middle of a desert. Companions around him are already dead. Desert wolves ate the corpses. Mo Li’s merchant caravan found him still alive, chased the wolves away, and healed his wounds. The place is called wolf desert. He remembers sleeping in a room, then sitting up to blazing sun and sand. He concludes he transmigrated from a world where he was doing programming and coding, and that he can speak this world’s language as an innate ability. Around strong men, he holds his head and says he only remembers that his name is Peng Da. ch. 1967
Mo Li offers him a place with the caravan and has a fire pit camel provided. A Gu Master asks if he is really from Western Desert, since he does not even know fire pit camels. Alone on the camel he finds that only his soul came over, into a body that belonged to this world, without that inhabitant’s memories. Mo Li later tells him they are Gu Masters, that Peng Da is also a Gu Master, and that he is rank two. Most of the caravan are rank two. Mo Li is rank three. Peng Da is an orphan in his original world, with no parents, lovers, or other attachments. That night a qi tide overwhelms the caravan while he is still asleep. ch. 1967
Appearance
His skin is brown from tanning. His arms and legs are thick, and his joints are bulging. The body is strong and young, unlike the weak original body he remembers. ch. 1967
Surrounded by wolves and scorpions
Mo Li slaps him awake again. He has bruises all over his body. Many Gu Masters fled and died. He survived while deeply asleep, and Mo Li dug him out of the sand before he could be buried alive. They head toward the closest oasis. Desert wolves and millstone-sized golden scorpions emerge around them and fight each other instead of attacking at first. When the two fail to break out and are surrounded, air currents arrive. ch. 1972
City in ruins
After several caravan trips he returns to Sand Wolf City exhausted, no longer treating peddling as an adventure. The city is ruins: corpses, fire, and smoke. He has no home there, so he follows Mo Li and finds Mo Li kneeling over his wife’s corpse. A mountain-sized beast’s footprint marks a huge crater. Peng Da judges that even rank five Gu Masters have little control, and that only becoming a Gu Immortal could grant some control over fate. ch. 2015
Dry well
Mo Li carries him, still injured, after a hurricane sweeps them over ten thousand li. Quicksand swallows them despite their Gu worms. They fall into a dry well under a rotating sand whirlpool that does not drop sand inside. Starlight passes Mo Li and enters Peng Da. Peng Da names the place Thieving Heaven Demon Venerable’s inheritance. Mo Li asks if that means Peng Da is an otherworldly demon, since the inheritance did not respond to Mo Li. Peng Da had not said so on purpose. Mo Li answers that he is still the Peng Da he knows. ch. 2016
Peng Da is only a mortal, so he practises mortal Gu from the inheritance. He must use one of the killer moves to leave. After days of practice his first killer move fails, and backlash makes him cough blood. Mo Li inspects him, then pierces his chest and destroys his heart. Mo Li says he wants revenge, that the true inheritance chose Peng Da, and that he cannot wait or depend on someone too young to master a killer move. Peng Da falls dead. Mo Li captures his soul and says the Thieving Heaven true inheritance is his. ch. 2016
Captured soul
Mo Li, who killed Peng Da and seized that inheritance, reaches the site of the immortal fight too late. Peng Da’s soul floats beside him, laughs that a mere mortal wants revenge against an immortal beast, and later, under pain, names electric circuit Gu. He tells Mo Li that Mo Li is not an otherworldly demon and will not understand what an electric circuit is. ch. 2019
Soul bargain
After Mo Li killed him and seized the inheritance, Mo Li cultivates the killer move golden-red armor. Peng Da’s soul cooperates because if Mo Li dies, the soul would also disappear. Mo Li promises that if Peng Da helps, Mo Li will help resurrect him. They reach an agreement. Peng Da’s soul later proposes refining electric brain Gu with wisdom bead grass to cut the armor’s consumption. ch. 2129
