He takes Zhan Bu Du as disciple after the young arrowtail eagle treats the youth as family, then finds the student a raw talent who works hard and shows a helpful, brave nature. His daughter-in-law makes Zhan Bu Du her godson, and his son, a wheelchair-bound middle aged man with only his upper body left, praises the teaching. During a fat butt bird attack he stops Zhan Bu Du from killing the bird king, explaining that even if the king dies another would rise, and that bird faeces fertilize their soil and trade. He calls Zhan Bu Du Little Du and teaches him not to judge by appearances alone. ^{ch. 1853}

When year beasts strike Beast Calamity grotto-heaven he is mobilized as a Gu Immortal, leaves Mountain Cliff City in his subordinates’ and disciple’s hands, and pats Zhan Bu Du’s shoulder saying the future belongs to him. Fang Yuan’s main body traps him in a formation on a tributary of the River of Time so the clone can stage a rescue. Among Combat Beast Warriors left in the golden fog, he is one of the last two still trapped before Zhan Bu Du’s rescue plan finishes. ^{ch. 1854 ch. 1855}

Heavily injured while a monster threatens Mountain Cliff City, he worries when Zhan Bu Du insists on risking immortal ascension to become a Combat Beast Warrior, then waves the disciple on after seeing the decision is firm. He watches the breakthrough with the crowd and, after Zhan Bu Du defeats the monster, looks on with a sincere smile of satisfaction. ^{ch. 1868}
