Gu Yue Jiao San

He first appears when Fang Yuan must pick a post-academy group: a neither tall nor short Gu Master with dark yellow sickly skin and triangular eyes invites Fang Yuan as the group’s attacker. An unattributed voice in the hall dismisses the group as a trash team with no background; the clan leader and elders look disappointed, and Fang Yuan joins on the spot to escape being forced into a major faction group. ^{ch. 87} The same stretch places the mission run on Qing Mao Mountain under the Gu Yue clan in the South Border. ^{ch. 4 ch. 87}

Appearance

He is neither tall nor short, with dark yellow skin that makes him look sickly, and a pair of triangular eyes. ^{ch. 87}

Group leader

On the first mission he leads a five-person party to collect permafrost decayed soil, frames a snow sprint as care for the newcomer while the veterans treat it as an authority display, then chides the three slower members against Fang Yuan’s pace. ^{ch. 87} Support member Gu Yue Kong Jing distributes tools and runs a Large Belly Frog for storage, while Jiao San later takes two of the six reward primeval stones while each other member takes one. ^{ch. 88} He next accepts a wild deer hunting mission, and the group pressures Fang Yuan over evaluation and lunch while Jiao San watches and offers rental help that keeps Fang Yuan under their eye. Fang Yuan reads Jiao San as the chain his uncle and aunt built to bind him. ^{ch. 89} Aunt’s talk confirms the uncle arranged the recruitment so asset-splitting would depend on a hostile group. ^{ch. 90}

Suppressing Fang Yuan

Fang Yuan classes Jiao San with uncle and aunt as rank two Gu Masters when weighing whether to kill them, and he sees consecutive mission acceptance as a lock that blocks the family asset application until he reaches rank two and can abandon a mission. ^{ch. 90} When Fang Yuan skips a North door meetup, Jiao San orders the group to find him before a rank two breakthrough lets him drop their mission and apply for asset splitting. ^{ch. 91} Jiao San never planned to kill Fang Yuan, because a member death would hurt his clan evaluation; he only promised his uncle Gu Yue Dong Tu to slow Fang Yuan past age sixteen for a fortune. ^{ch. 94} Fang Yuan later ranks him as a slightly famous group leader whom he might beat one on one, below Gu Yue Man Shi in fame. ^{ch. 107}

Wild boar king

During the small beast horde, Chi She’s recon finds the sickly snake group contesting a wild boar king with Jiao San’s red lava python, named as the only one in the village. ^{ch. 94} A later recall classes that boar as a thousand beast king that normally needs three teams, and says the sickly snake group could contest it mainly because the beast was already injured. ^{ch. 114} Jiao San pulls Fang Yuan back into the fight to hold the boar while the group heals the python, intending to let beasts injure Fang Yuan without striking personally, and he orders Hua Xing to plant corrosion blood grass Gu during that hold. ^{ch. 94} When the fight turns, he uses a yellow poisonous cloud from his nostrils as his trump card, then abandons the remaining members and flees with Gu Yue Kong Jing when a lightning wolf pack arrives. That yellow cloud has no named Gu in that fight. ^{ch. 95}

Translation notes

The fan translation body text writes Gu Yue Jiao San and sickly snake Jiao San. A chapter 87 translator footnote prints Gu Yue Jiao Shan and explains that the name means three angles, probably for the triangular eyes. ^{ch. 87} The fan translation does not print Chinese characters for the personal name.
