Grabbing the Dragonfish
Ancient Soul Sect has driven the desolate beast dragonfish into a rage to block Heaven’s Envy Manor’s group, trapping them on the small island at the lake’s center. The dragonfish periodically rams the island’s base, shaking the ground. Dragonfish are usually peaceful, but Ancient Soul Sect’s Gu Masters used some method to drive this one mindless. Heaven’s Envy Manor’s people, only mortals with limited primeval essence, can do nothing but wait it out. ch. 910
A Gu Master urges Elder Zhu Ning to use their own sect’s immortal method too, since Heaven’s Envy Manor should not lose to Ancient Soul Sect. Zhu Ning admits he cannot. A supreme elder gave him a defensive Immortal Gu before the trip, but it offers no help against a rampaging dragonfish, and he does not even know where in his body it sits. Everyone sighs in disappointment. ch. 910
Only Wei Wu Shang’s eyes shine at the thought of owning an Immortal Gu one day. The four older Gu Masters only smile bitterly or shake their heads, since he is still young enough to dream. Only years of hard experience teach how few people ever truly become immortals. ch. 910
Zhu Ning decides they will wait for the dragonfish to calm before moving on. A Gu Master worries the other nine sects will claim everything first, leaving them only scraps. Zhu Ning reasons this is not entirely bad, since every Immortal Gu needs matching immortal essence, and letting rivals exhaust their reserves now should leave Heaven’s Envy Manor stronger later. Spirits lift slightly at that. ch. 910
Zhu Ning then warns them of two people. They must never offend Spirit Affinity House’s Feng Jin Huang, or Immortal Crane Sect’s Fang Yuan. Wei Wu Shang doubts this, since each of the ten sects fields five members against these two lone figures. Zhu Ning explains that Feng Jin Huang’s parents are both immensely powerful Gu Immortals, and that Fang Yuan frightens him even more, though he knows no more than that. The group concludes only that Immortal Crane Sect must trust Fang Yuan to face all of them alone. ch. 910
A shrill sound splits the sky, and a figure tears across it at a speed that trails sonic booms, stopping above the island in a single breath. The five Gu Masters recognize him as Fang Yuan. Shock leaves their mouths open, and the wind of his passage blows in and forces their eyes shut. Fang Yuan takes in the waves, the island, and the dragonfish at a glance, and guesses the rage comes from a soul or wisdom path technique. ch. 910
He reaches out and a strength path giant hand flies from him into the water. Rather than raising waves, the lake parts to cooperate with him, since pulling water Immortal Gu is fused into the hand itself, and the senseless dragonfish makes the capture easier by not fleeing. It roars and struggles, whiskers lashing, but the hand holds steady as Mount Tai. Fang Yuan draws it from the lake and seals it inside his own immortal aperture. ch. 910
Not satisfied, he then activates pulling water Immortal Gu again on the lake’s ordinary dragonfish, sweeping countless more into his aperture as well. The Heaven’s Envy Manor group only stirs once he finishes and flies off. Only now do they grasp what their sect’s warning truly meant. They trade awed, frightened remarks about his overwhelming might, wondering aloud if he has already become an immortal. With the dragonfish gone they can continue their journey, certain they will never forget the scene, breathing hard and worn in body and mind despite never having moved at all. ch. 910
