The heart of loneliness is the new heart Ren Zu gains in The Legends of Ren Zu after a starry night of silence.
Attitude Gu tells Ren Zu that the heart is called loneliness, warns of endless pain, loneliness, and even fear, and says he need only stare at the sky on a starry night and say nothing until daylight to obtain the heart of loneliness. When Ren Zu feels lonely under that sky, his body suddenly has a brand new heart. Unable to endure the loneliness and fear, he digs out both eyes; they become his eldest son Verdant Great Sun and his second daughter Desolate Ancient Moon, and he says he can finally endure the pain of the heart of loneliness. ch. 131
A later summary repeats that Ren Zu was unable to endure the heart of loneliness, dug out both eyes into a son and daughter, and thus alleviated his sense of loneliness. ch. 144
Self Gu within
Ordinary Abyss counsel
In Ordinary Abyss, the heart of loneliness speaks in Self Gu’s voice and tells Ren Zu to plant a tall accomplishment tree so he can climb out. ch. 807
Feathermen stretch
When feathermen mock Ren Zu, Self Gu grows angry inside the heart of loneliness and jumps out. ch. 870
Love and freedom
A later stretch states Ren Zu obtained a heart of loneliness with Self Gu residing within it. He takes that heart out when asking feathermen to fall in love with him, and argues that his heart of loneliness is part of the love process too, but the feathermen refuse. ch. 1229
Predicament and birth
Strong Gu points at the heart of loneliness in Ren Zu’s chest as his final heart, noting it holds Self Gu and that without it Ren Zu might die. Strong Gu stuffs that heart into the Predicament. Loneliness proves hard to digest, the Predicament’s belly bursts, and Ren Zu’s heart of loneliness fuses with his skin and flesh into the boy Great Strength True Martial. ch. 2053
