Black lanterns are a light phenomenon unique to immemorial black heaven, countless blooming flames whose blind fire blinds those who do not shut their eyes in time.
While Central Continent’s three Immortal Gu Houses stop to rest after a night heavenly wolf group withdraws, countless lights bloom around them like light red flowers with dark spots hidden inside the flames; Bi Chen Tian names the phenomenon black lanterns, says blind fire is nurtured inside them, and shouts at the Gu Immortals not to look. Many Gu Immortals look before they can react, and by the time the three Immortal Gu Houses escape, at least three Gu Immortals are permanently blind and seven more have severely weakened vision that can only be salvaged at a high price. Black lanterns cause no physical damage of their own, so the Immortal Gu Houses simply fly on through them rather than around. ch. 1242
