Memory Gu is named in The Legends of Ren Zu as the Gu needed to store information in the mind before cognition refines knowledge.
On Book Mountain inside Qian Kun Crystal Wall, an inkman elder tells Ren Zu how to turn information into knowledge. He says it is not difficult to gather knowledge oneself, and that firstly one needs memory Gu to store all of that information inside the mind. Cognition Gu then offers to help refine knowledge, and the elder agrees that cognition can produce knowledge. ch. 2161
Storage versus learning
In a later Legends of Ren Zu stretch, after learning Gu appears on Carefree Wisdom Heart, she starts to learn knowledge and convert it into things she truly understands. The text contrasts that work with only storing knowledge using memory Gu. ch. 2177
