Fang Yuan sees his name among familiar high-status competitors on the Refinement Path Convention ranking list. ch. 838 Spectators at Demon Expelling Sect name him Myriad Dragon Dock’s participating Gu Master and call him Lord Dragon Chief. Outside rumor paints him as a lone cultivator who violated sect rules, was thrown out of Myriad Dragon Dock, and is competing to place well and return. An Immortal Crane Sect elder says his main cultivation is refinement path with fire path on the side, and that he has grandmaster attainment in refinement path. ch. 839

Challenge from Fang Yuan
He and Fang Yuan have each taken first place through the first seven rounds. He is ranked about seventh while Fang Yuan sits beyond thirtieth. When Fang Yuan enters his test venue, he probes whether Fang Yuan of Immortal Crane Sect has come to lose early. Fang Yuan’s prior-life knowledge differs from outside information: Firesmith Dragon Chief’s main cultivation is fire path, not refinement path. After expulsion he obtained a fire path Gu Immortal inheritance, became a fire path Gu Immortal, and Myriad Dragon Dock secretly took him back. They sent him into the convention because his refinement path attainment is grandmaster level. He disguises himself as a mortal Gu Master. In Fang Yuan’s previous life he ranked second at this convention and in the tenth round suppressed three quasi-grandmasters on the spot.
