As Chai tribe’s leader of a small-scale tribe facing mid-scale Zhong tribe, he knows three of those beetles hold the tribe’s most precious goods gathered to side with Liu Wen Wu. ch. 494
Retreat before Chang Shan Yin
When Fang Yuan’s wolf group under the Chang Shan Yin name surrounds both camps, Chai Zhang and Zhong Fei You shift from near fighting to a shared urge to cooperate, then both retreat after Fang Yuan orders them out of the way. ch. 494 From a distance he refuses elders who want to wait for leftovers, says staying risks Chang Shan Yin’s slaughter, and orders Chai tribe to leave Crescent Lake at once. The same stretch places that weak small tribe in the Northern Plains Imperial Court fight and coming blizzard, needing a stronger force to cling to for survival. ch. 495
Brother at the heroes assembly
At Liu Wen Wu’s heroes assembly matches, after Water Demon Hao Ji Liu kills Fire Prodigal Chai Ming with water image Gu methods, the Chai tribe leader cries out “Brother!!” as Chai Ming dies. ch. 497 Earlier chapters already name Chai Zhang as that tribe’s leader on the road to the same assembly stretch. ch. 494 ch. 497
