Fat sand scorpions are ordinary creatures, not Gu, that a Western Desert mortal family keeps in a stable for their meat.
Beside the house of Han Li’s family stands a flimsy looking stable with three fat sand scorpions inside. They are fat like pigs and no threat at all. When Han Li’s footsteps sound, they rush out from the shadows of the stable. He pours a basin of ground dagger grass and rice husk paste on the ground, and the three surround it, chewing loudly and making a humming noise. ch. 674
The narration says they are not Gu but ordinary creatures. Their meat is plump and delicious, and the money from selling it would be a huge sum for the entire mortal family. To Han Li’s family the three are the most important assets, so Han Li feeds them even when he goes without dinner himself. ch. 674
