Great Scholar Shen is a roaming scholar of Profound Literature grotto-heaven who judges a poetry contest with Teacher Jiang and once ranked among the ten great scholars.
At a poetry competition he praises the students’ scholarly aura and credits Brother Jiang’s teachings. After calling their literary battle a tie, he proposes a passing-the-flower game so three winning students can recite poems, then opens his eyes and asks who holds the red flower. ch. 1824
Judging Li Xiao Bai
He smiles and nods when Li Xiao Bai greets the teachers, laughs when the student takes another turn under the rules, and praises a poem’s final line. Using a method to inspect literary qi and talent qi, he finds ordinary talent and takes no suspicion, calling Li Xiao Bai very honest. ch. 1825
Ten great scholars
Li Xiao Bai later recalls that Great Scholar Shen, who competed against Teacher Jiang, was one of the ten great scholars in a past selection, yet remains at rank five peak stage for lack of outstanding political talent or a powerful background. Teacher Jiang and Great Scholar Shen are said to have wandered outside the Imperial Court rather than become officials, one opening a private school while the other roamed everywhere, with immortal ascension nearly hopeless under Imperial Court control of immortal materials. ch. 1870
