While Thieving Heaven Demon Venerable still had only rank six cultivation, he used familiar face to make Deng Zuo Yan take him for his best friend Wan Che Zhen, gained entry to the house, and stole many treasures from the blessed land. ^{ch. 709}

Enraged to the point of spitting blood, Deng Zuo Yan found Wan Che Zhen and fought him in a fierce match until Wan Che Zhen stopped defending and took three blows that left him near death, which finally convinced Deng Zuo Yan of their friendship. He then tried to heal Wan Che Zhen without regard for the cost, and once he learned the truth he treated Thieving Heaven as the enemy he must kill. ^{ch. 709}

Second scam and death

While Deng Zuo Yan was about to face a tribulation, Wan Che Zhen left in secret so as not to burden him. Thieving Heaven then disguised as the injured Wan Che Zhen, pretended to lie ill, and extorted countless cultivation resources before escaping. Deng Zuo Yan lost a huge amount of foundation and died not long after during his heavenly tribulation and earthly calamity. The record treats the pair of deaths as the most illustrious achievement of familiar face, a non-offensive move that still indirectly took two rank eight lives. ^{ch. 709}
